Year 5

Welcome to Year 5.

This half term we are learning:


For this half term the children will be using and applying their knowledge through place value and addition and subtraction


  • Weeks 2 - 3:  Poetry we will be looking at the poem 'The Walrus and the Carpenter' by Lewis Carroll.
  • Weeks 4-6:  Fiction - Campfire Ghost Stories.  By the end of this unit the children will be writing their own stories and performing them.  They will look at a variety of texts and will be comparing them.  

RE:  Creation

  • Have the opportunity to know that people have asked questions about Creation.  Reflect on some important responses.

  • Have the opportunity to know the story of Creation in the Bible.  Reflect on the importance of the story

  • Have the opportunity to know the story of the Fall and how it helps us understand suffering in the world.
  • Have an opportunity to understand that God calls us to care for creation.  Be aware of our responsibilities.

  • Have the opportunity to know about some of God’s great helpers.  Reflect on what we can learn from them.

  • Have an opportunity to be aware of God’s great gifts to us.  Reflect on the importance of our own gifts

It is our class assembly on Wednesday 25th September at 9.10 in the school hall.

Other Subjects:

Science:  Properties and changes to materials 

History:  The effects of Anglo-Saxon, Viking and Scots settlements in Britain.

Art:  Line, tone, shape and texture.  

Computing:  STEAM challenges.  Using computational thinking to solve problems?  

Music: Cyclic Patterns – Exploring rhythm and pulse.  Music of John Williams – film scores and Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky

PSHCE:  The children will be working on their co-operation and resilience skills.   

Our homework for this half term is:


Continue in the use of the prodigy app, practise your times tables


Reading books - children need to continue to read widely and for their enjoyment.  

Weekly spellings in your spelling journal, practise the year 5 and 6 spellings




Year 5 PE is timetabled on:  Thursday

Please ensure your child's PE kit is in school on the above day.

PE kit is white t-shirt, black shorts and pumps / trainers.  During the winter, children may wear black or blue jogging bottoms.
