Year 5

Welcome to Year 5.

This half term we are learning:


  • Weeks 1 - 5: fractions
  • Week 6:  Decimals and percentages


  • Weeks 1 - 2:  Persuasive writing - The true story of the three little pigs.  The children are writing persuasive letters to proclaim Mr Wolf's innocence.
  • Weeks 3 - 4:  Balanced Argument - We are discussing the question:  Should The Big Bad Wolf have been arrested?
  • Weeks 5 - 6:  Explanation texts - Our writing will be linked to our science topic - forces

RE:  Reconciliation

  • To understand that actions have consequences.  Reflect on some of the consequences of actions
  • To understand why Jesus blessed the poor in spirit.  Reflect on what we can learn from Fr. Arrupe
  • To know about God’s love and forgiveness.  Reflect on what this means for us.
  • To understand the meaning of sin.  Reflect on how sin hurts us, others and our relationship with God. 
  • To know what happens in the sacrament of Reconciliation.  Reflect on how the sacrament helps us. 
  • To understand the meaning of sin.  Reflect on how sin hurts us, others and our relationship with God.

Science:  Forces 

History:  The Mayan civilisation

Art:  The work of Frida Kahlo.  Colour - theory, mixing and pattern

Computing:  An interactive art exhibition linked to the work of Frida Kahlo.  Children will be making QR readers

Continue in the use of the prodigy app, practise your times tables


Reading books - children have been set a challenge to see how many books they can read this half term, please can you sign their form when they have completed a book.

Weekly spellings in your spelling journal, practise the year 5 and 6 spellings

Children will be given their Thursday Big Write on a Monday morning.



This term we will continue with our Friday swimming.  Children are aiming to achieve the national curriculum standard in swimming.

Year 5 PE is timetabled on:  Thursday

Please ensure your child's PE kit is in school on the above day.

PE kit is white t-shirt, black shorts and pumps / trainers.  During the winter, children may wear black or blue jogging bottoms.
